Ekspres Malam menu cover |
In the early 1960s, there were only two night express trains between Jakarta and Surabaya. They were named Bintang Senja (Train 7, Surabaya Kota - Solo Jebres - Semarang Tawang - Jakarta Kota) and Bintang Fajar (Train 8, Jakarta Kota - Semarang Tawang - Solo Jebres - Surabaya Kota). These trains were the successors of the Nacht-Expres, beginning operation in 1953, after the introduction of the CC200 class diesel-electrics. However, they were slower than their predecessors, not least because of the roundabout route via Semarang and Solo. Equipment for these trains were mostly new steel-bodied passenger cars from France, The Netherlands and other European countries. As there were few travelers then, first and second class passengers travel on the same car, in separate sections. The small number of first class passengers enable the DKA to provide a comprehensive dining selection, such as these: |
